The hottest interior trends from Milan – Salone Del Mobile 2017

Every year, interior aficionados from around the world flock to the global capital of fashion and design – Milan. Salone Del Mobile is the world’s largest trade fair of its kind – a five-day event that showcases the latest and greatest in the world of furniture. This year, our designers set off in force to do some trendspotting, and here’s what they hand-picked for you.

The future is viridescent

From rich, verdant forests to the freshest of mints – green is known for its ability to soothe and balance, and it’s certainly having a moment on the interior scene, especially since Pantone announced ‘Greenery’ as their colour of the year for 2017. Design mogul Sir Terence Conran describes green as having a “calming effect in the home and an ability to combine well with numerous colours”. Safe to say, this year is all about injecting some pastoral peace into your space with plush fabrics, subtle accessories and plenty of plant life.

Dialing down the tone

Colour has cooled down to make way for a much more elegant palette – an unwavering theme of calming hues ran throughout many of the exhibitions. It’s time to dial things down and introduce a calm sophistication with furniture and fabrics in unsaturated colours.

Refining for elegance

Forget brash and oversized and think scaled-down – repeat patterns are being refined, with heritage houndstooth, contemporary geometrics and classic checks shrinking into subtler, more beautiful, forms. This has shifted the focus to finer details, rather than bold statements, for a look that exudes modern elegance.

Into the woods
Milan 2017 – coloured wood

The most championed material in the home, wood has long been held in high regard. This year sees coloured woods resurfacing, and designers getting creative with dyeing techniques that put an emphasis on natural grain, resulting in pieces with a unique, contemporary look.

Leather’s new calling
Milan 2017 – Leather

Forget convention, this beautiful and durable material is truly proving its worth as a design staple through inspired utility. Think handles, cladding and even lighting – leather is more flexible than ever before and immediately adds opulence in the simplest of ways.
